Work in South East Asia

The Commonwealth Ombudsman is currently engaged in activities with the Ombudsman in Indonesia and Thailand. Funding is primarily provided through AusAID.

Vivienne Thom (Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman) presents a paper and answers questions from a large group of interested people in Palangkaraya, the provincial capital of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. This was part of a seminar coordinated by the National Ombudsman Commission of Indonesia to explore ways to provide a decentralised complaints service. It is an example of an Indonesian Australian Ombudsman Linkages and Strengthening activity.

The Commonwealth Ombudsman and the National Ombudsman Commission in Indonesia are the lead partners in conjunction with the Western Australian State Ombudsman and the New South Wales state Ombudsman in a set of activities titled Indonesian Australian Ombudsman Linkages and Strengthening (IAOLAS) scheduled to run from 2006 to 2009. Activities support exchanges between the Australian and Indonesian organisations to share knowledge and strengthen core ombudsman functions.

Officers of the Commonwealth Ombudsman have participated in various staff exchanges and training exercises with officers of the Ombudsman of Thailand from its inception in 2000. Recent work has included seminars in Thailand, exchanges of outreach personnel and detailed seminars on the functions of information technology in the improvement of ombudsman services. A milestone was reached between the two organisations when ten Thai officers were supported in coming to Australia to work with New South Wales State Ombudsman and Commonwealth Ombudsman staff in a two-week train-the-trainer program.
